Official GOV.UK guidance is clear: these age-of-sale rules apply to online retailers too.

Until 29 October 2026

Don’t leave age assurance until the final week.

Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026

What changes on 29 October?

A clear date. Clear rules for online and physical retail. Official guidance is published on GOV.UK.

Read official GOV.UK guidance

01

Vapes and nicotine products become explicitly 18+

Retailers must not sell covered vaping or nicotine products to anyone under 18.

02

Online retailers are included

Official guidance states the rules apply to retailers including online retailers — not only physical vape shops.

03

You need confidence in the customer’s age

Before completing a sale, retailers need to be satisfied that the customer is 18 or over.

04

Selling to under-18s is an offence

Selling to someone under 18 is a criminal offence. Enforcement may include a fixed penalty notice or prosecution.

In England, Wales and Scotland, fixed penalty notices for this offence are set at £200. Penalties can differ by nation — see official GOV.UK guidance.

Age assurance in the real world

Age rules are about real people, not checkboxes.

Online, you don’t have a shop assistant standing in front of the customer. Your store needs another way to establish that the person buying is old enough.

  • Real customers Make it easy for genuine adult customers to buy.
  • Stronger protection Help prevent under-18 sales and strengthen your age controls.
  • A better buying experience Smooth, privacy-first age assurance at checkout.

How does your store check age today?

Take a moment to reflect on your current process. This is not legal advice — it is a practical checklist before 29 October.

If you’re reviewing your age controls before 29 October, Checkify gives you a privacy-first way to add age assurance directly into the customer journey.

Answers, not documents.

Age assurance without turning checkout into an identity application

Your customer wants to buy. Your store needs an age answer. Keep the journey that simple.

1

Customer reaches an age-restricted purchase

Checkify is invoked at the appropriate point in the customer journey.

2

Checkify verifies the required age

The customer completes the appropriate age-assurance process.

3

Your store gets an answer

You receive the result you need to continue the purchase journey.

Your store receives
OVER 18 ✓

Not: Passport number · Date of birth · Home address · Identity document copies

Your store needs to know whether the customer meets the age requirement — not collect more personal information than necessary.

Stronger age controls don’t have to mean collecting more identity data

Traditional approach

  1. Customer uploads identity data
  2. Business receives or stores personal information
  3. More sensitive data enters the merchant environment

Checkify

  1. Customer proves the required fact
  2. Checkify creates the verification result
  3. Merchant receives the answer it needs
Is this customer over 18?
YES ✓

Not their passport. Not their address. Not a copy of their identity.

Does the Tobacco and Vapes Act apply to online vape shops?

Do vape customers have to be 18?
From 29 October 2026, it is an offence to sell covered vaping or nicotine products to anyone under 18. This page focuses on that age-of-sale change — not the separate generational tobacco sales restriction that begins later.

You need confidence that the customer meets the required age. That is different from unnecessarily collecting full identity information such as passport numbers or document copies. Checkify is designed to help you receive the age answer you need.
Does Checkify store my customer’s ID?
Checkify is built so your store can receive the verification result it needs without you collecting identity documents by default. Checkify does not share unnecessary identity attributes with the retailer as part of a standard age answer.

Can Checkify work with Shopify?
Shopify support is in early access / coming soon. You can join the waitlist and talk to Checkify about timing for your store.
How long does integration take?
It depends on your platform. WooCommerce and JavaScript/API paths are designed to connect to an existing store rather than require a rebuild. Custom stacks vary. We recommend integrating and testing ahead of 29 October rather than leaving it to the final week.
Does Checkify guarantee legal compliance?
No. Checkify provides age-assurance technology to support retailers’ compliance processes. It does not replace your legal responsibilities, guarantee a statutory defence, or make a merchant automatically compliant. Businesses remain responsible for understanding and meeting their legal obligations.
